TED talk: Sheryl Sandberg

•December 23, 2010 • Leave a Comment

This is by far my most favourite TED talk.

http://www.ted.com/talks/sheryl_sandberg_why_we_have_too_few_women_leaders.html

Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook talks about women in the workplace, and how our general attitudes inherently prevent us from moving up. Women tend to sell themselves short, and also have to deal with society’s expectations of us, in a way that men don’t. It’s a complicated topic for 15 mins of talking, but her points are absolutely spot on, and really made me look at myself and think, damn it … it’s a shame that she is right. She is SO right, and it’s plain fucking depressing that she is.

I have so many reactions and emotions from just watching this video, that it is overwhelming. The problem is in all levels of work, whether you’re just starting out in a part time  job, or even for those who work in the corporate world. This problem doesn’t only affect Sheryl because she has a Harvard education, or she comes from/lives in a world of privilege. It’s not about women being better than men, and that the world would be a better place if we ran it – it’s about true equality and our attitudes, and how we really need to start changing them, both sides.

Somewhere – Sofia Coppola

I AM SO FUCKING EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE

I am a huge, gigantic Sofia Coppola fan – she has a way of capturing moods, atmosphere, and emotions in a way that really connects with me. The Virgin Suicides was one of those films that ‘changed my life’ when I saw it. And by that, I mean it really affected how I watched/dissected/appreciated movies (and what I watched) from that point forward. It was beautiful, ethereal, and heart breaking.

Her next movie, Somewhere has Stephen Dorff (OMFG, I HOPE ITS A COMEBACK) and Elle Fanning and it looks (from the trailer) so sweet (literally) – I hear it’s loosely based on her relationship with her father (some dude named Francis) *cue the tears*

Starcraft Commentators – Day(9)

•December 7, 2010 • 2 Comments

so in contrast to my love letter to HuskyStarcraft I’m going to talk about another caster, Day(9). This dude is HARD CORE. It’s the only way to describe him. Huskystarcraft is like a sports highlights commentator – he just describes what is happening in the game, makes some really funny jokes, is super cute, and calls it a night.
Day(9) on the other hand is like the professor of Starcraft 2. His vidoes are usually 40-60 mins long – and this is not because the games he casts are that long, it’s because he goes off on tangents and just talks, forever. He will actually break down the gameplay for you and have insight into strategies, and talk in detail about what the players are doing, and what it all means, how it will impact that game, and how you can incorporate it into your own gameplay. This guy is like … the Plato of Starcraft. It is unreal, his enthusiasm and commitment to detail in his casts are much respected. Yes, it is also very hot.
This is one of my favourite casts of his, with the crazy marauder medivac bomb drop on banelings. BAD FUCKING ASS!

Vegetarian Chronicles

•December 6, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I decided to start having “vegetarian days” once a week starting immediately. It was a decision based on a bunch of reasons, but mainly health (I love eating meat, rare steak, nom nom nom) – but the shit that gets fed to animals these days is kind of gross and I don’t really want it in my body, and also for the sake of my general carbon foot print. I am by no means an environmentalist, but whatever I can do, right? I know I could eat ‘organic’/'grain fed’ meat etc. but that shit is expensive, and it’s also hard to find if you’re eating out (which is really the challenge here, when the meal options are more or less out of my control)

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to eat meat (that’s what she said , ha ha ha). But anyone who REALLY knows me also knows that I love to eat my greens and salads (that’s what she said?). The tough part about this goal is not so much incorporating the veggies into my diet, but more so resisting the meat choices when eating out and in social situations.

Anyways, I will be using my blog as a way to document my success of failure with this ‘project’. I aim to eventually be vegetarian for 3 or 4 days a week by mid-2011. Here we go!

Last Friday was a success though!
