Best of 2010: Hot Chip – One Life Stand
my first of the retrospective posts on my music taste in 2010. It’s nice to try and chronicle what I listened to (which was something that used to almost be impossible before the advent of Last.fm) and it will also nice to be able to open this up in 10 years and feel embarrassed about myself. I think I’m going to do a whole post on Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Anyways, first up is Hot Chip

One Life Stand was released near the end of 2009 as the first single from their latest album, and having only really liked 2 or 3 Hot Chip songs (sometimes, they are just TOO MUCH) I was really surprised at how accessible One Life Stand was. The bass line gets me every fucking time. Anyways, their album dropped soon after and I found it pretty decent. I’m not going to even pretend that I love every track from it, hell I probably only like half of them (I’m looking at you “Slush” … just … fuck is all I can say), but on the recommendation from my friend, I bought a ticket with a few friends to check them out when they were in Toronto. Ironically, that friend ended up having an exam that night and couldn’t make it, but the 4 of us got to witness what Hot Chip is like live (we even got to see The XX open for them. How amazing amirite?)
Hot Chip are UNREAL live. They take what they have on their albums and push it to a whole other level. While some of their songs can be repetitive and simplistic on the album, in the live setting, every song they play is like a sonic force to be reckoned with. I was so taken aback by how great they are live that I’m officially throwing their album into my best of 2010 list even though I only like half of it, solely cause their live show was that effective.
